MillionPlus, the Association for Modern Universities, has today (10 November) welcomed the creation of a new Department for Education (DfE) / Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce) fund to support degree apprenticeships. The funding, which is worth £4.5m, will be available for specified universities and colleges from September 2017.
Designed by universities, employers and professional bodies, degree apprenticeships deliver high-tech and high level skills and offer an alternative to a traditional degree course. Bringing together university study with paid work, degree apprentices spend part of their time at university and part with their employer.
Pam Tatlow, Chief Executive of MillionPlus, said:
“This funding will provide an important additional resource to boost the availability and development of degree apprenticeships. Modern universities have a long history of working with employers.
“These allocations to universities and colleges confirm once again that modern universities are ahead of the field and will be crucial players in delivering the government’s ambition to expand high quality, high level apprenticeships.”
