For Black History Month, UUK spoke to Leeds Trinity University Vice-Chancellor Professor Charles Egbu about racial inequality in higher education and his own journey from undergraduate to university leader.
"I think we’re beginning to see some form of honesty around issues of race and diversity, but we need to make some bold changes," said Professor Egbu. "It’s not just about saying that racism exists; we need to be more proactive and commit to becoming anti-racist institutions. At my institution, Leeds Trinity University, we’ve achieved the Bronze award in the Race Equality Charter. We recognise the challenge and have a plan to deal with it.
"While there have been some changes in the sector, progress has been slow. We need to be urgent about this work."
