Professor Dave Phoenix, Chair of million+ and Vice-Chancellor of London South Bank University talks to University Business about the challenges and opportunities for the UK higher education sector over the coming years. Modern universities have performed well with regard to student satisfaction rates and graduate employment, but for all these successes there are issues for government to address in the falling participation of part-time and mature students. He notes that modern universities are well placed to support the government's ambition to double the rate of progression of young people from low participation backgrounds and to ensure that the UK increases its share of the international market.
