1992-2012: Modern Universities Changing Lives
Tuesday 6 March 2012 marked the exact 20th anniversary of the 1992 Further and Higher Education Act which allowed modern universities to apply for ‘university title’. To celebrate this auspicious occasion million+ held a celebratory Parliamentary Reception on the afternoon of the 6th which provided the opportunity for modern universities to showcase their long history and impact within Higher Education followed by a dinner which brought together key stakeholder, MPs and Ministers, past and present.
The Parliamentary Reception and exhibition was kindly hosted by Paul Blomfield MP, Secretary All Party Parliamentary Universities Group and keynote speeches from The Rt Hon Vince Cable MP, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills; Chuka Umunna MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills; Liam Burns, President, NUS; Professor Les Ebdon, Vice-Chancellor, University fo Bedfordshire.

We followed the reception with a dinner in the Palace of Westminster kindly hosted by Rt Hon Lord Boswell, Education Minister at the time of the Bill's passing. Guest speakers also included Rt Hon David Willetts MP, Universities and Science Minister and Shabana Mahmood, Shadow Minister for Universities. Guests included key stakeholders in Higher Education, MPs and Ministers, past and present.
